Reliability snapshot

The third-generation Touareg first-owns the naturally-aspirated-replacement turbocharged 3.0 TSI V6 (an entirely new EA839 design, not a continuation of the earlier supercharged unit) in this contour, alongside the four-litre V8 TDI reserved for the highest trims. Intake-valve carbon build-up and a turbo wastegate actuator fault are the most common complaints on the V6 petrol, while the V8 diesel's EGR cooler cracking — which causes coolant loss and can show as white exhaust smoke — is the single item most worth a cooling-system check before purchase. AdBlue/SCR system faults triggering warnings and, in persistent cases, a driving-mode restriction apply to both diesel variants. Built exclusively as a five-door SUV, the third Touareg pairs every engine with an 8-speed Tiptronic torque-converter automatic. 4MOTION all-wheel drive is standard throughout. China, the EU and Russia all receive meaningful allocations, with the V6 diesel as the mainstay and the smaller 2.0 TSI serving as the Russia/China entry-level petrol option; the V8 TDI stays a narrow, EU-market flagship. A mid-cycle facelift updated the styling and electronics without changing the fundamental engine range. None of this has been checked against factory documentation — it is community-level orientation for a pre-purchase inspection, particularly worth pairing with a cooling-system pressure test on the diesel variants.
