The Peugeot 407 (D2) was built from 2004 to 2011 as a four-door saloon, a five-door SW estate and a two-door coupe launched in January 2006. Petrol engines span the 1.8 16v (EW7A) and 2.0 16v (EW10A, shared with the 307) through the 2.2 16v (EW12J4) to the range-topping 3.0 V6 (ES9J4S) offered in the coupe. Diesels run from the 1.6 HDi (DV6TED4, shared with the 307) through the 2.0 HDi (DW10BTED4) to the 2.2 HDi (DW12TED4, sharing its combined belt-and-chain timing drive with the 406).

The 1.8 16v deserves a specific check on fuel and oil history: this engine is documented as sensitive to both, with injectors, spark plugs and ignition coils typically the first components affected, alongside idle-control fouling and oil seepage around the valve covers and crankshaft seal. Ask the seller directly what fuel and oil the car has run on. The other engines follow the checks already documented for their families elsewhere in this contour — timing-drive inspection for the petrols, turbo oil supply and EGR for the diesels, and the combined belt-and-chain check for the 2.2 HDi.

To judge a specific 407, confirm which body you are looking at and cross-check the engine against it, since the coupe and the V6 were offered in a more limited combination than the saloon. Get a full fault-code read across all control units and keep the printout, and have a franchised dealer run the VIN to check for any open manufacturer actions.
