Overview
Local preview — inspection orientation

The Peugeot 208 (A9) ran from March 2012 to August 2019 as a three- or five-door hatchback (the three-door dropped from the range in 2018). The petrol lineup started with VTi naming — 1.0 (EB0), 1.2 (EB2), 1.4 (EP3) and 1.6 (EP6) naturally aspirated engines plus the 1.6 THP turbo (EP6DT) and the GTi's high-output 1.6 THP (EP6CDT, 200-208 PS) — before shifting to PureTech branding partway through production. Diesels span the 1.4 HDi (DV4TD) and the 1.6 e-HDi/BlueHDi (DV6C).

On the 1.2 VTi/PureTech, this engine uses a wet timing belt, so ask specifically whether it has ever been replaced and check the oil-change history, since oil condition matters more for a wet belt than an external one. On the GTi's high-output THP, read stored and pending fault codes and watch live fuel-rail pressure during cranking and under load, since the high-pressure injection pump is a documented attention point on this engine family. The other petrol engines follow the timing-drive checks documented elsewhere in this contour for the Prince family, and the diesels follow the EGR and turbo checks documented for their families.

To judge a specific 208 A9, establish the exact engine from the registration document first, since VTi and PureTech naming overlapped in displacement partway through the range. Get a full fault-code read across all control units and keep the printout.

Pre-purchase checklist

Diagnostics
  • Have a full fault-code read done across all control units on this 208 and take a copy with you
Documents
  • This engine uses a wet timing belt — one that runs inside the oil system rather than externally — so ask specifically whether the belt has ever been replaced and what the interval was, since a wet belt behaves very differently from an external one
  • Establish the exact engine from the registration document — the A9 switched from VTi naming to PureTech branding partway through production with overlapping displacements
