Reliability snapshot
The first Touareg is the flagship engine showcase of this whole contour: it first-owns the 3.2 and 3.6-litre VR6 FSI petrols, the naturally aspirated 4.2 V8, the extraordinary W12 6.0-litre (kept here as a catalog-only entry, since it never accumulated a distinct community-reported pattern of its own), the five-cylinder 2.5 TDI, the V6 3.0 TDI, the V8 4.2 TDI, and a V10 5.0 TDI — eight engine families in a single generation. The FSI's rear-mounted timing-chain rattle and the V10 TDI's oil-pump and balancer-shaft drive-gear wear (which can starve the engine of oil if left unaddressed) are the two items most worth a specialist's attention on this model. Built exclusively as a five-door SUV, the first Touareg paired its engines with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed Tiptronic torque-converter automatic; 4MOTION all-wheel drive was standard across the entire range, with no front-wheel-drive variant offered. China, the EU, North America and Russia all received meaningful volumes across most of the engine range, though the W12 and V10 TDI were narrow, low-volume offerings. A substantial 2007 facelift updated the styling and refined several of the engines without changing the fundamental range. Given the complexity and rarity of several engines here, a specialist pre-purchase inspection is worth considerably more than this page — none of it has been checked against factory documentation.
