Reliability snapshot
The first Tiguan carries the earliest, most failure-prone version of the EA888 2.0 TSI in this whole contour: its timing-chain tensioner design was revised twice during the model's life, and a cold-start rattle on an early example is a genuine warning sign rather than a curiosity. The same generation also first-owns the 1.4 TSI twincharger and the 2.0 TDI common-rail diesel, whose EGR cooler clogging, DPF regeneration failures on short urban trips, and common-rail injector wear are patterns that reappear on every later Volkswagen sharing those units. A dual-mass flywheel that has gone soft under the diesel's torque is a common and separately-priced repair worth budgeting for. Built exclusively as a five-door SUV, the first Tiguan paired its engines with a 6-speed manual, the DQ250 wet-clutch DSG, or a Tiptronic torque-converter automatic; both front-wheel-drive and 4MOTION all-wheel-drive versions existed depending on engine and trim. It reached China, the EU and Russia in meaningful volume, with the 2.0 TSI as the RU-market mainstay alongside the diesel in Europe. A 2011 facelift updated the front fascia and interior trim without changing the underlying engine range. Nothing here has been checked against Volkswagen's own service documentation — it is community-sourced orientation for someone inspecting a specific car, and every pattern above should prompt a targeted check rather than stand in for one.
