Five engine families are first documented on this page, more than on any other Passat generation: the direct-injection EA113 2.0 FSI and its turbocharged TFSI sibling, the naturally aspirated 3.2 VR6, the 1.6 FSI, and the diesel PD unit-injector engines. The 2.0 TFSI's high-pressure fuel pump cam follower is the single most consequential item on the list — the follower can wear through and score the camshaft lobe it rides on, and a rattling or ticking noise from the front of the engine at idle is worth investigating before it worsens. The PD diesels carry their own camshaft-follower wear plus injector wiring-loom chafing, both well documented by the time this generation was current. Body styles ran to a conventional sedan and a wagon (Variant); gearboxes spanned 5- and 6-speed manuals plus the dry-clutch DQ200 and wet-clutch DQ250 dual-clutch automatics, with quattro-equivalent 4MOTION available on the more powerful petrol engines. Both the EU and Russian markets received the mainstream FSI and TDI trims, while the high-output R36 with its distinct 3.6-litre VR6 (kept as a separate, catalog-only entry here) was a narrower, largely European offering. No mid-cycle facelift changed the mechanical layout during this generation's run. None of this has been checked against factory documentation — it is community-level orientation for inspecting a used example, not a verdict on any individual car.
