Reliability snapshot

The B5 first-owns the widest engine spread of any single page in this contour: the 1.8T 20-valve turbo four, the naturally aspirated 1.8 and 2.0 eight-valve fours, the VR5, the V6 2.8, the extraordinary W8 4.0-litre — a narrow-angle eight fitted to a handful of flagship Passats — and both the 1.9 TDI and a 2.5-litre V6 TDI. The W8's four-chain timing drive and the V6 TDI's Bosch VP44 rotary injection pump are the two rarest and most consequential items: both are expensive to put right and worth a specialist pre-purchase inspection rather than a casual look. Oil sludging on the 1.8T and secondary-air-injection pump failures across several of these engines are the more everyday concerns. Body styles were a sedan and a wagon; gearboxes ran 5- and 6-speed manuals plus a 5-speed Tiptronic torque-converter automatic — no dual-clutch transmission existed at this generation. Both front-wheel drive and, on the higher-output engines, 4MOTION all-wheel drive were offered. The EU, North America and Russia all received meaningful volumes across most of the range, though the W8 was a narrow, low-volume EU offering. A mid-cycle facelift in 2000 updated the styling without changing the mechanical layout. None of this has been checked against factory documentation — given the age and rarity of some variants here, a specialist inspection is worth more than this page.
