Reliability snapshot

The A5 Jetta first-owns the North-American-market 2.5-litre five-cylinder MPI engine in this contour — a naturally aspirated unit distinct from the European TSI/TDI range, whose rear-mounted timing-chain tensioner and guide wear (a cold-start rattle) is the single most-reported issue among owners of this variant. The shared 1.6 MPI, 1.4 TSI and PD-diesel entries carried over from the Golf apply equally here; an intake-manifold flap or runner-motor fault causing rough running and an illuminated EPC light is common across the whole 1.6/2.0 naturally aspirated family regardless of body style. Body styles ran to a conventional sedan and a wagon (SportWagen in North America); transmissions spanned 5- and 6-speed manuals, the DQ200 and DQ250 dual-clutch DSGs, and a Tiptronic torque-converter automatic depending on engine and market. Front-wheel drive was standard throughout. North America, the EU and Russia each received a distinct engine mix — the 2.5 MPI was essentially North-America-only, while Russia and Europe leaned on the smaller-displacement petrols and, in Europe, the TDI. No facelift altered the mechanical range during this generation's run. As throughout this contour, none of the above has been checked against factory documentation — it is community orientation for inspecting a specific car, not a verdict on its condition.
