Reliability snapshot
The Mk8 first-owns four distinct entries in this contour: the further-revised EA211-evo 1.0 and 1.5 TSI three- and four-cylinder petrols, the EA288-evo 2.0 TDI diesel, the original 1.4 TSI plug-in hybrid drivetrain used in the GTE/eHybrid at launch, and the fourth-generation EA888 2.0 TSI for GTI and R (documented in depth on the Arteon page, which shares the same "evo4" unit). The 1.0/1.5 TSI's wet, belt-in-oil timing drive is a meaningfully different design from earlier dry timing belts and deserves its own attention at service time; the plug-in hybrid's high-voltage traction-battery degradation and 12-volt auxiliary-battery drain are the two items specific to that drivetrain. Note that the Mk8.5 facelift's GTE/eHybrid switched to an updated 1.5 TSI evo2 plug-in hybrid drivetrain, kept here as a separate, catalog-only entry since it is too new to have its own established community pattern yet. Body styles ran to a five-door hatchback and a wagon (Variant); transmissions spanned a 6-speed manual and the DQ200, DQ381 and DQ400e (plug-in hybrid) dual-clutch automatics. Front-wheel drive was standard throughout. The EU and North America both received meaningful volumes; the Golf was withdrawn from the Russian market after the Mk7 and did not return with the Mk8. A substantial 2024 facelift (Mk8.5) updated the styling, electronics and, on the GTE/eHybrid, the hybrid drivetrain. None of the above has been checked against factory documentation — it is community orientation for a pre-purchase inspection of what remains a current-generation model.
