Reliability snapshot

The Mk5 first-owns the naturally aspirated 2.0 FSI and, alongside the Passat B6, shares in documenting the 2.0 TFSI's high-pressure fuel pump cam-follower wear — an early Mk5 with a ticking noise at idle deserves the same scrutiny as its Passat sibling. The base 1.6 FSI and the PD unit-injector diesels round out the range, with the diesel's camshaft and cam-follower wear plus intake swirl-flap actuator failures being the two most common owner complaints from this era. A carbon-fouled throttle body causing unstable idle is a cheap, common fix worth ruling out before assuming anything more serious. Body styles spanned a hatchback, an estate (wagon), and the raised, tall-roofed Plus/MPV variant sold in some markets; gearboxes ran 5- and 6-speed manuals plus the DQ250 wet-clutch DSG and a Tiptronic torque-converter automatic. Drive was front-wheel only throughout. The EU, North America and Russia all received meaningful volumes, with the naturally aspirated petrols and the TDI diesel forming the mainstream lineup and the GTI's turbocharged engine as the performance option. No facelift changed this generation's mechanical layout during its run. Nothing above has been checked against Volkswagen's factory documentation — treat it as a starting point for inspection, not a finished verdict.
