Reliability snapshot
The Mk4 is the founding generation for this whole line's naturally aspirated 1.6 and 2.0 eight-valve base engines, the 16-valve 1.4, the 1.8T 20-valve turbo four, the narrow-angle VR5 and VR6 six-cylinders, and the first 1.9 TDI — nine distinct entries first documented here, more than any other Golf page. The 1.8T's tendency toward oil sludging that starves the turbocharger and oil galleries is the single most consequential item for a car this age; a service history showing regular, correct-interval oil changes is the strongest reassurance available. The rear-mounted VR5/VR6 timing chains, secondary-air-injection pump failures triggering emissions fault codes, and brittle coolant flanges cracking with age round out the list. Body styles ran to a 3- and 5-door hatchback and a wagon; gearboxes spanned a 4-speed automatic and 5- and 6-speed manuals — no dual-clutch DSG existed yet at this generation. Front-wheel drive was standard, with 4MOTION available on the VR6. The EU, North America and Russia all received substantial volumes across nearly the whole engine range. A 2003 facelift refreshed the styling without changing the mechanical layout. Given the age of these cars, treat every item above as a strong prompt for inspection, not a certainty — none of it has been checked against factory documentation.
