Overview
Local preview — inspection orientation

The Peugeot 206 (T1) ran from 1998 to 2012 as a three- or five-door hatchback, the 206 SW estate and the 206 CC retractable-hardtop coupe-cabriolet. The petrol range spans the entry 1.1 (TU1JP) and 1.4 (TU3JP) engines through the 1.6 16v (TU5JP4, shared with the 207) up to the naturally aspirated 2.0 16v hot-hatch engines of the GTi (EW10J4, 135 hp) and RC (EW10J4S, 175 hp). Diesels run from the 1.4 HDi (DV4TD, shared with the 207) to the 2.0 HDi (DW10ATED).

On the GTi and RC hot-hatch variants, idle behaviour is worth observing directly: watch for an erratic or hunting idle speed at a genuine cold start and again once the engine is warm, since the idle-speed control components on this era of naturally aspirated petrol engine are a documented point of attention. On the 2.0 HDi, ask specifically about the car's typical journey pattern, since short urban trips are relevant context for this engine's documented DPF and injector attention points, and back that up with a scan-tool fault-code read. The 1.6 16v and 1.4 HDi follow the timing-drive and EGR checks already documented for those engines elsewhere in this contour.

To judge a specific 206, establish the exact engine from the registration document first, since the range spans a very wide spread from entry-level to hot-hatch. If it is a GTi or RC, ask specifically about track use or modifications. Get a full fault-code read across all control units and keep the printout, and have a franchised dealer run the VIN to check for any open manufacturer actions.

Pre-purchase checklist

Documents
  • Ask when the timing belt was last replaced and whether the water pump was replaced at the same time — this engine uses a belt, not a chain, and a leaking pump is the documented trigger for belt failure
