The W176 A-Class is the first Mercedes-Benz generation on the MFA transverse front-wheel-drive platform, replacing the W169. Its petrol trims (A 180, A 200, A 250) all run the M270 turbocharged four-cylinder in 1.6 and 2.0-litre forms; its diesels (A 180d, A 200d, A 220d) carry the well-known OM651 2.1-litre CDI. The A 45 AMG (M133) is catalogue-only in this graph. M270 is the anchor engine for the entire MFA cluster: the three sibling generations (C117 CLA, X156 GLA, W246 B-Class) share both M270 and OM651 and therefore add no new occurrence patterns of their own. Three community-reported M270 patterns are modelled here — early timing-chain stretch (2012–2014 production), HPFP failure concurrent with GDI carbon build-up, and wastegate rattle on the 1.6L DE 16 sub-variant; none have a confirmed manufacturer scope at this time. Community orientation only, not a reliability rating or a purchase recommendation.

Pre-purchase checklist
- ☐Start the engine from cold and listen for rattling or ticking from the timing chain area
- ☐Scan stored DTCs and check live fuel/ignition/boost data before the test drive
- ☐Check high-pressure fuel rail pressure at idle and under load
- ☐Inspect intake valves / ports for carbon deposit build-up (GDI characteristic)
